Universidad Europea gives its all as part of Business Solidarity Day

11 oct 2017

The Universidad Europea will take part, as in previous years, in Business Solidarity Day, a project aimed at promoting and fostering the social participation of companies via corporate volunteering. Business Solidarity Day, organized by Cooperación Internacional and Atresmedia, will take place on October 21 in several Spanish cities with a large number of volunteers helping out, among them 30 faculty and students from the Madrid, Valencia and Canaries Campuses.

Every year, a number of not-for-profit organizations come together at this great social event so that they can open their doors to volunteers from companies wishing to help out with various groups at risk of social exclusion such as homeless persons or people with disabilities, the elderly, and sick children or those in the inclusion process. The day will be packed with a wide variety of solidarity-based experiences and activities –repair of equipment, recreational games, talks, cookery workshops, etc.– which will be headed up by volunteers together with participating organizations. A total of 10 volunteers per Campus will be invited form part of a solidarity team comprising students and faculty.

Volunteers from the Universidad Europea de Canarias Campus will visit the El Sauzal district and will accompany and entertain youngsters with learning difficulties from the “Cortijo José de Nazaret” home, part of the Congregación Fraternidad de la Divina Providencia [Congregation of the Divine Providence Fraternity]. In turn, members of the team from the Madrid Campus and the Asociación YUNA will accompany youngsters with differing abilities, aged between 16 and 50 years, to enjoy a day out at the FAUNIApark. Lastly, participants from the Valencia Campus, in conjunction with the Fundación San Juan Bautista  Children’s Home and the Colegio Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados , will meet at a bowling alley to instill sportsmanship and camaraderie in children at risk of social exclusion.

Participation by volunteers from the University is within the framework of Global Days of Service, an annual event held in October, at which Laureate International Universities’ educational institutions provide students, faculty and staff the chance to express their commitment to solidarity with their local communities, and celebrate the social impact of our organization. Last year, over 22,500 volunteers from 36 institutions in 16 countries dedicated more than 220,000 over the course of the month. As well as taking part in Business Solidarity Day, the Universidad Europea will be organizing a range of activities, including a day focusing on diversity.
