Over 50 Universidad Europea professors and students analyze the economic impact of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament

The Universidad Europea team analyzed aspects such as average spectator spending, impact on employment and its contribution to the Tax Agency

On Monday, March 6, the Universidad Europea brought its professors and students together with top representatives of the Mutua Madrid Open to present the results of the economic impact of the 2016 edition of the prestigious tennis tournament. The findings show that 244,660 people attended the MMO (10.6% more than in 2015) and it generated 93 million euros (75 million in direct spending at the tournament).

The analysis, was lead by professors Álvaro Fernández Luna and Pablo Burillo, from the Universidad Europea and the Real Madrid Graduate School – Universidad Europea with the collaboration of 6 professors and 46 students of Sports Management, Sports Science and Sports Science and Physical Therapy, who also analyzed this years impact. In addition to these figures, the study extracted data on the impact of average spending per spectator (€298.84), generating jobs and social impact (3,713 direct and indirect jobs) and state income (€17.45 million).

The team of researchers specialized in economic and sports management analyzed the data of 1,375 people visiting the tournament using a personal interview method designed by experts from the Universidad Europea. They also received support material such as reports and data from the Mutua Madrid Open, National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Autonomous Community of Madrid and the City Council.

Álvaro Fernández Luna, a professor at the Universidad Europea School of Sports and Exercise Sciences, believes that, “this agreement shows how important applied research is for teaching our students. Pablo Burillo, a professor at the Real Madrid Graduate School - Universidad Europea, stressed that the study findings confirm that “the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament is one of the most important sporting events in the city of Madrid, helping to expand tennis and Madrid on a national and international level.
