12th International Conference on Innovation in Higher Education


Universidad Europea and the Office of the Vice Rector of Quality and Academic Innovation would like to give an early welcome to all those taking part in the XII JIIU, which will take place at our Villaviciosa de Odón campus on July 20 and 21, 2015

The suggested core topics of the training workshops and papers are as follows:

  • Experiential learning: ubiquitous learning, significant learning, learning by doing, hands-on learning, experiential workshops, immersion workshops, internships, collaboration projects between universities and businesses, entrepreneurial projects.
  • Competency development and evaluation: activities and teaching methods for the development and evaluation of cross-disciplinary competencies, emotional intelligence, mentoring, advising, coaching.
  • Participative learning methodologies: expanded education, invisible learning, communities of practice, gamification, etc., cross-disciplinary projects covering a range of subjects and any methodology based on participation.
  • Technologies for education: online and blended learning, learning environments and networks (Personal Learning Environments), blogs, collaborative learning, social networks, augmented education, mobile learning and ubiquitous learning, open educational resources, and MOOC.
  • Education in values for sustainable development: experiences in designing and teaching subjects with a sustainable approach (social, economic and environmental), learning-service experiences, creation of educational materials for a sustainable curriculum, cross-disciplinary projects with a sustainable approach, teaching initiatives for a social entrepreneurship.

We hope that, as on previous occasions, the Conference will offer higher education professionals an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.

    Each paper shall have a maximum of 8 authors. Papers can be written in English and in Spanish.

    The maximum length admitted for publication in the proceedings shall be 8 pages per accepted paper, following the format specified in the publishing template. The minimum length shall be 6 pages.

    We recommend that you know what is expected of a JIIU paper and make sure it meets these expectations by using the rubric provided.

    Authors should send their submissions through the EasyChair system by May 10, 2014 at the latest. Following, you will find the steps to follow for submitting the proposals for the XII JIIU:

    Phase I. Proposal submissions for their assessment at a later phase using the format specified in the publishing template for the Scientific Committee (Fase II).

    • Create an EasyChair account (only if you do not already have one) in: "Sign up for an account". Follow the instructions to complete this process.
    • Join EasyChair as a XII JIIU author. (Use the link provided above in step 1).
    • Select the event you want to submit the paper for, in this case XII JIIU (If it does not appear on the list, it is because the submission period has elapsed).
    • Select the New Submission option on the top menu.
    • Complete the process by filling in the necessary details and attaching the paper in PDF format. 
    • After the paper has been sent, the system will confirm receipt.

    Phase III. Scientific Committee will notify the authors regarding the acceptance and/or suggestions for improvements before Jun 10, 2015. In order for accepted papers to be published in the proceedings, at least one of the authors must be registered before July 1, 2015, and the final version must be sent before June 20, 2014, following the instructions provided and using the template designed for this purpose (Phase IV).

    It is not necessary to submit the format of the paper presentations through the EasyChair system. About posters, we recommend following the format specified in the digital poster specifications.

    Registration fee:

    Payment of this fee entitles you to attend the JIIU sessions, coffee breaks and lunches on July 20 and 21, and to receive the Conference documentation (including proceedings with ISBN including the papers and posters presented, in electronic format).

    • Up until June 15, 2015, reduced registration fee: € 100
    • After this date, standard registration fee: € 130
    • Students: € 60

    Registration deadline: July 1, 2015
    Those registering as students will have to provide proof of student status on arrival at the Conference.
    Before paying the appropriate fee, you will need to sign up as a user in the XII JIIU web. It is necessary to fill in all the details on the registration form and attach proof of payment.

    Since 2004, Universidad Europea has demonstrated its commitment to teaching innovation through the annual call for entries for the Universidad Europea Awards for Teaching Innovation. These awards aim to promote innovation in the classroom and to recognize the work of professors who are committed to adapting their teaching to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area. 
    This year the awards aim to recognize and support the professional development and innovation of the professors at Universidad Europea. We are sure this event will be of interest to all faculty members as it contributes to the recognition of their talent in the context of Teaching Innovation.
    The object of the awards is the submission of projects in any of the following areas:

    • Experiential learning
    • Development and assessment of competencies
    • Participatory learning methodologies
    • Technologies for education
    • Education in values for sustainable development

    The projects must be original and unpublished (no print or digital dissemination, no ISBN). Projects that have already received an award in any public or private competition cannot be entered. The project reports for the XII Awards for Teaching Innovation must be sent via the EasyChair system by July 1, 2015, using the application format specified for this call for entries.
    The decision of the jury will be announced at the Awards Presentation Ceremony that will take place in Villaviciosa de Odón on July 21, 2015.
    The prize money* will be as follows:

    • A first prize of €3,000
    • A second prize of €1,000
    • A special mention for the best Universidad Europea Teaching Innovation project 1,000 €

    * The prize money is subject to a withholding tax in accordance with the provisions of R.D. 214/1999, of February 5, approving the Regulations on Personal Income Tax.

    Participation requirements
    Any professor teaching at any Spanish or international university belonging to Laureate International Universities may participate in this call for entries, either individually or as part of a group. The assessment process will take into account the candidates' career and commitment to teaching innovation (projects, surveys, publications, etc.).
    In order to participate, the lead candidate must have registered for the XII International Seminar on Innovation in Higher Education before the deadline (July 1, 2015).
